Originally Fairways Leisure Market, the centre was opened in 1992, on land adjacent to Moorabbin Airport.[4]
In 1997, the centre was purchased by the Austexx Group and was the groups first of eleven Direct Factory Outlets shopping centres in Australia.[5] Since opening, the centre has been expanded. Kingston Central Plaza also adjacent to DFO is a smaller shopping precinct, which opened in 2008, and has 10 stores including: The Good Guys, Aldi Supermarket and Sam's Warehouse.[6]
The centre comprises up to 135 stores mainly devoted to fashion,[2] and contains two food courts.
DFO Moorabbin's main local rival is the super-regional shopping centre, Westfield Southland, which is located approximately 5 kilometres north-east from the centre, in Cheltenham.
The shopping centre is serviced by Bus routes, as well as the nearby Cheltenham railway station, a 30-40 minute walk from the centre.[3]
